Bloodsport

Bloodsport is a 1988 martial arts film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The film is based on true events in the life of Frank Dux. It tells the story of an American man named Frank W. Dux (Jean Claude Van Damme), who was trained from his youth in the ways of Ninjutsu by a Japanese master of the art, Senzo Tanaka (Roy Chiao). Primarily to honor his mentor out of gratitude and respect for having been allowed the training in place of Senzo Tanaka’s deceased and only son, Dux leaves for Hong Kong to participate in the Kumite — an illegal and underground, freestyle, single-elimination and occasionally deadly full-contact martial arts tournament to which the world’s best martial artists are clandestinely invited every five years.  The film performed well at the box office, grossing $11,806,119 domestically on a budget of only $1,100,000, a 1,073% return on cost. Bloodsport became one of Jean Claude Van Damme’s first starring vehicles and extensively showcased his athletic abilities. On display are numerous physical feats such as his trademark helicopter-style, jump spinning heel kicks, and Van Damme’s ability to perform a complete split. It is now considered a cult classic.

  1. Love it when Van Damme is ontop of the concrete pillar looking out over the city, doing the splits while practising his moves. All this and hes oiled down!!! :D :D No other action star in the history of film could do this shit. None would even dare to try. He keeps a straight face throughout the scene too. And people still have the cheek to question his acting ability.

  4. When Frank Dux stares into Jacksons eyes longingly as he lies on the hospital bed. This show of man love wasnt needed. They only met each other afew days ago. By all means he should avenge his friend but i think Frank was looking for a different kind of reward in return if you know what i mean ;)

  6. The acting is a bit questionable.

“Now i show you some trick or two” and “ok usa” are standout quotes for me.

But regardless of that this is JCVD’s best movie in my opnion. Plenty of action, memorable quotes, slow motion repeat shots and a decent soundtrack.

And best of all its a true story!! Frank Dux even said so and he wouldnt lie ;) …mmmhhmmm :)

  7. Never jumped.

Vintage Van Damme this. The acting is very questionable but i think it adds to the film :) All down hill for The Mussles from Brussles from here on in. Never to reach the peaks of Bloodsport.

Very suspect about the stotyline though as stebsb mentions. Mr Dux perhaps slightly strrrrrrretching the truth. Makes for a bloody good cheesey 80s action flick though. :)

  8. Not sure if this can be laid at JCVD’s door, but surely this jumped when we learned that this true story, based on the life of Frank Dux, was a load of horseshit?

There’s actually a hint on the “deleted scenes” on the DVD. When Van Damme fulfils his contractural obligations by flashing his arse, you can see that the pants he pulls down to do so are on fire; and, like the burning bush that spoke to Moses, those pants have gone on to inspire millions to great things.

  9. This is Van Damme in his best movie.

Awesome slow motion Van Damme fighting action. Fantastic Van Damme acting. Superbly conditioned side parted Van Damme hair and the all important Van Damme 3 second butt flash.

Also contains so many great quotes ” Now i teach you some trick or two ”

This film rocks Van Damme it :)
