It’s shocked us with attitudes once common but now abhorrent, such as the flagrant racism of – well, “The Birth of a Nation”. Even in the age of home entertainment, there’s nothing quite like a trip to the cinema. The patient waiting through trailers and adverts. The dimming of the lights. The slow drawing of the curtains from across the screen. The thrill of the fanfare, announcing that at last the film’s due to start. It’s usually glorious. But sometimes patience isn’t rewarded. Sometimes, expectations aren’t met by reality. When does the silver screen produce the steaming turd? When does “Hollywood magic” become “Hellish and tragic?”.
