Big Bang Theory, The

The Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom that premiered on CBS on September 24, 2007. Set in Pasadena, California, the show is centered on five characters: two roommate Caltech geniuses, experimental physicist Leonard Hofstadter and theoretical physicist Sheldon Cooper; their neighbor across the hall Penny, an attractive blonde waitress and aspiring actress; and Leonard and Sheldon’s equally geeky and socially awkward co-workers and friends Howard Wolowitz, an aerospace engineer and a non-PhD from JPL, and Rajesh Koothrappali, a particle astrophysicist postdoc also working at Caltech. The geekiness and intellect of the four guys is contrasted for comic effect with Penny’s social skills and common sense.

In August 2009, the sitcom won the best comedy series TCA award and Jim Parsons won the award for individual achievement in comedy.  In 2010, the show won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Comedy, while Parsons won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.  On January 16, 2011, Parsons was awarded a Golden Globe by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series – Comedy Or Musical. The Big Bang Theory has been highly rated since its premiere. During its fourth season, it became television’s highest rated comedy.

  1. Not sure if i agree that the girlfriends ruined things. When they appeared i already felt like the show required some new blood to keep storylines fresh. And everyone would agree that theres now more scope for different plot lines with girls added to the mix. If im being honest though i always felt this was a slightly over rated comedy with maybe a couple of laughs per episode if that. Ive always been a little confused as to why its so incredibly popular.

  2. The girlfriends! Obviously brought in to try and appeal to the female fans out there who can try to identify with them. BBT is more than happy to sacrifice laughs and entertainment to desperately try to reach a wider audience.

  3. TBBT has really jumped the shark in season 6. The exact moment was when Raj took Lucy for a text date in the library. That was just a stupid gimmick based on the idea they both can’t talk to each other, but takes it beyond the bounds of credibility. Shame, was a real good show

  4. The jury’s still out, but for me, it has the Scrubs season 7 vibe like it’s in the process of jumping. We’ll see.

  7. i can’t stand the show anymore! i used to love it, now i’m just sick of it. they always play the same episodes on reruns, and i think people only likes the show because of sheldon. whenever anyone mentions the big bang theory, or the actual big bang event, they automatically reply: “I LOVE SHELDON!!!”

    i’d still watch new episodes, still, i don’t know when exactly, but i think it has jumped the shark.

    @Flutterby,
    because now he is just a gag character, kinda like with Fonzie and Happy days.

  12. I liked it to begin with but after a while it started to get predictable. Sheldon isn’t funny anymore just annoying. I do think it’s very over rated.

  14. Still love it. It fills the ‘Friends’ shaped hole in my life. Or it tries very hard too.

  17. Kinda ok at the start. But the girlfriends realy add nothing to the show. No one should have to see ‘Blossom’ on the television again.

  18. Never been a fan. The audience seem to be in hysterics at every little joke. Puts me off instantly.

  19. i liked this show when it started. Seemed fresh, didn’t take itself too seriously and was funny! Not everyone knew of it back then. By Season 3 though EVERYONE was suddenly a fan of it… and as often happens, it sold out. The main thing that changed for me was the cast grew, with all the guys having girlfriends now… NONE of which are remotely funny. Especially “Blossom” who plays Sheldon’s girlfriend, do we really need a female Sheldon? it’s too over-hyped and up it’s own a** now and while it does still provide some laughs, i just can’t be bothered with it…
