Happy Days is an American television sitcom that originally aired from January 14, 1974 to
May 8, 1984 the series presents an idealized vision of life in mid-1950s to mid-1960s America. Set in the midwestern city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the series revolves around teenager Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) and his family: his father, Howard (Tom Bosley), who owns a hardware store; mother Marion (Marion Ross); younger sister Joanie (Erin Moran); and high school dropout, biker and suave ladies man Arthur “Fonzie or The Fonz” Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler), who would eventually become the Cunninghams’ upstairs tenant.
The earlier episodes revolve around Richie and his friends, Warren “Potsie” Weber (Anson Williams), Ralph Malph (Donny Most) with Fonzarelli as a secondary character. As the series progressed, Fonzarelli proved to be a favorite with viewers and soon more story lines were written to reflect his growing popularity. Fonzie befriends Richie and the Cunningham family, and when ‘Richie’ (Ron Howard) left the series following his character’s wedding to his long-time college sweetheart, Winkler’s Fonzie became the central figure of the show.

When did Happy Days Jump the Shark ?

Ive just watched the ‘pump your blood’ video again. Lets think about this closer. Not only are The Fonz, Ritchie, Ralph, Lori Beth and Posties girlfriend in on this with their musical instruments at the ready. But the rest of the class seem to be too?? They happily start clapping along in time almost instantly to Potsies bizarre sing song and know the chorus aswell
Then at the end they even do their own impromptu Pump Your Blood Conga round the class.
So everyone, not only his friends must have learnt the song and the dance previously on the off chance that some guy in class may or may not pass his biology exam.
Fonzy: ‘Yo class mates, we have a situationamundo here. Potsy thinks he might fail some test so to help him we are going to learn the worlds worst ever song and dance routine in order to baffle the teacher into giving him an A.’
Kids: ‘Yeaaa Fonz, cool idea.’
Worst moment in television ever.

Chachi. Not only for how annoying the show became after he joined but because Happy Days no longer looked like a show set in the 50s. The bouncy hair, flared trousers and tight tops was such a 70s and early 80s look.

I remember the one where Ralph’s father got a divorce and I thought at the time, we’re missing some of the 50′s fun here. What I didn’t realize at the time is that this episode, “Ralph’s Family Problem” marked the final regular appearances of Richie Cunningham and Ralph Malph on the series. This was the moment of shark jumping, even though Fonzie had done the stunt a few years before. I understand why the shark jump episode marks a change, and it predates the move to the 60′s, the burning down of Arnold’s, the Fonz crying and the appearance of Mork from Ork, but despite betraying the original premise of the series, I still found the 1977-1980 episodes despite all their craziness to be very entertaining.

I hated the episodes were Ritchie and crew would be in a sticky situation and just as they are about to get beaten up etc in walks The Fonz to save the day. Really? A round little chubby hoodlum who has ate too much pasta and walks slowly is to be feared by everyone??
He can beat up gangs of thugs, scare away the neighbour hood bully or even apparently use some weird mind trick to change police officers minds. Looking back now, im thinking ‘wow’ why did i never question this at the time.

When all the new cast members joined. Jenny Piccalo, Roger and Eddie. None of these guys added any value to the show. If anything the only served to highlight just how much some of the original cast members were missed and how the dynamic of the show had changed so much.

Didnt Fonzy constantly get with highschool chicks dismissing any women his own age?? I presume because his ‘powers’ only seemed to work on the young and easily impressionable. Any older women didnt see a 5ft tall high school drop out biker who lives above a garage as an attractive option. Theres nothing ‘cool’ about that.

Where did Fonz find the finance to become a partner in Arnolds? He stayed in his friends parents loft conversion and wore the same clothes every day. When the show started to revolve around Fonzy there was serious dip in quality. Realy funny in the early days, realy painful in the later.

There was nothing 50s about Chachi in his tight flares and vest top.
Chachi : Australian/American colloquialism.
Based on Happy Days character.
Used for both Male or Female
Defined: Someone who thinks they are a bit too cool… Generally the person who dresses a bit over the top and/or always trying to “one-up” someone else’s comments, whilst tending to overdo everything they try to do….
Example:
In a Night-club where everyone is in cargo pants and shirts… “chachi” rocks up with the denim jacket and greased back hair, and sun glasses on his head at 2am…thinking he’s a little too good for everyone else at the club.
“Look at that guy over there….what a chachi….!”

The girlfriends. Lori Beth joining changed everything. She ruined Ritchie and changed him from the nervous ginger teen who went on dates with various women to a hen pecked ginger teen constantly getting lectured by his overbearing girlfriend. I dont think she realy added anything worth while to the show. Plus Potsies girfriend was far too hot to be going out with him. Im guessing she was with him cause he was the local popstar on the brink of making it big…in Milwaukee

Many moments here some which i had too look up as i didnnt remember them ( Pumps Your Blood WOW ). But to me it will always be the Shark Jump. I am willing to give it as far as the episode where arnold’s burned down. After that.. I think it was a new season..(season 6?) that’s when it started to suck when the every episode was about Chachi and Fonz would make the occasional entry for 5 minutes.
Sure there were some bum episodes before this but they were sort of warnings of what was to come. The combination of Ralph, Potsie, Ritchie & Fonz was the best.
More than that, the writers just ran out of good ideas.. there is only so much you can do. It becomes harder in the entertainment industry to keep afloat because there is an expectation to do better than before.. EVERYTIME!
I bet you that the writers changed, thus Fonz didn’t have the cool lines and strong character anymore. Its like going to a restaurant that used to be great and one day you go there and the food has changed.. Then you find out the chef has changed! That’s probably what happened here!

Singing/Dancing. Fonzy was just a little bit to keen to show of his moves. If there was dance contest on Arnolds tiny floor then you bet he would be up showing his moves off for the audience of 10 spectators. Expressing yourself through the medium of dance has never been the best way to showcase how tough you are.

Ritchie leaving was the ‘jump’. Please dont write Ritchie and Ralph leaving in your answer. Ralph leaving was one of the best things to happen to the show. Unfortunately he just happened to leave the same time as Ritchie the best character did.
This coincided with Fonz becoming slightly rounder, slightly mellower and slightly more boring. Move with the times Fonz. Chasing teenagers around when ur hair is greying isnt a good look no matter how cool you think you are. Surely there must be tonne off needy Milf’s in Milwaukee looking for love that are around your age?

There were a few Jump The Shark moments in the first 4 seasons before Fonz literally jumped one in season 5.
1. Any episode with Spike involved.
2. Fonz exhibiting superhuman abilities, such as starting cars with a punch.
3. Pinkie Tuxadero.
4. The hoodlum brothers who were Fonz’s nemesis, especially the one who wore a feathered medieval hat and spoke in olde English, adressing Fonz as Sir Fonz.
5. Fonz dating the one from Laverne & Shirley who resembled The Count from Sesame Street. About as cool as Satan’s bumhole.
6. Politically Correct tubthumping episodes, such as anti-smoking ones, ‘wear a crash helmet’ ones, ‘fighting isn’t cool’ ones, ‘obey your parents/the system’ ones.
7. Potsie turning from Ritchie’s sensible friend in season one to a complete douchebag who the world and it’s cat laughed at.
8. Fonz’s abiltity to pull any woman on the planet with merely a click of his fingers, despite blatantly wearing a girdle.

This show started going wrong way before the now infamous shark jumping. Fonzy the cool hard man biker hangs around with 3 cardigan wearing virgins in Milwakee for god sake. Living in a loft conversion above one of the ginger virgins parents house. Yet this combination of middle aged biker and friend to geeks makes him a babe magnet. hmmm
How come Posty Webber ended up getting a fairly hot chick? She was alot hotter than this young Shakin Stevens deserved. I presume she found the xmas jumpers he wears throughout the hot summers irresistable.

Ritchie Leaving was the begining of the end IMO.
But you cant discuss Happy Days without mentioning either the Shark Jumping or Bull Riding etc. These moments of drama did nothing for the show and were just thrown in for the hell of it . There was always a situation when Fonzy put himself in danger for some shitty reason or another. Talk about small man syndrome, get over it Arthur.
And Fonzies super powers WTF ? The man can do anything it seems including punching doors of their hinges, controlling mechanical objects and mind control over chicks with a click of his fingers. Shame he couldnt use his amazing powers to keep his expanding waist line at bay.

Fonzie hung around Ritchie, Ralph and Potsy because they made him look cool by contrast.
If Fonzie hung around cool, or even just average, people, we’d see him for what he was – an unconvincing “Italian” biker, with a gut increasingly threatening to break free from the girdle Winkler presumably wore under his t-shirt.
By hanging around with the Three Musky-Queers, Fonzie was like Chris Isaak in a tuxedo, singing a jazz classic in a smoke-filled Manhattan night-club.
Oh, there’s another point – Milwaukee? WTF does a “cool Italian biker” live in Milwaukee, rather than New York or LA?

Potsy was pretty camp i agree but with a hidden sinister side too i feel. Like he could snap at any moment. How many chicks made it back from inspiration point after going up there with Potsy? How many ” must’ve made their own way home and got lost ” ? Hmmmm ?

Happy Days Jumped the Shark so many times its impossible to count. But I’ll try:
i) The actual Jumping of the Shark.
ii) Chachi. “Wa wa wa” was not a catch phrase, it was a speech impediment that prevent the true sentence – “What am I doing on this programme as I’m making it even worse” from being spoken.
iii) Ralph “tragic” Malph – the precursor of Screech in Saved by the Bell, where “wacky antics” just DON’T become “loveable comedy”.
iv) Ritchie leaving.
v) The Fonz transforming from mean yet loveable Italian biker to pot-bellied near-paedophile who was possessed of godlike powers.
vi) “Do the Fonzie” – rivalling the Batusi for worst dance “craze” ever.
vii) But almost matched by Potsy’s ultra-gay “Pump your blood” dance.
viii) Mork. Did Robin Williams not realise we could SEE him making the sound-effects?
ix) The loss of “Rock around the Clock” as a theme tune.
x)Pinkie Tuxadero, or, indeed, any of Fonzie’s girls, including Laverne and Shirley. If the Fonz was such a babe-magnet, why did he always pull such munters?

Maybe the Fonz purposely chose to pile on the weight to mimic the Tom Bosley look and attract the elusive Mrs C? There was always a weird sexual tension there.
Lets be honest it always looked pretty awkward around the dinner table with Mrs C purposely leaning over to dish out extra mash to Fonzy , her breasts heaving in his face.
Was there any moment that Ritchie told Fonz to back off from Mrs C ?? I would respect him alot more if he did that.

Ritchie shouldve appreciated The Fonz more. He would never have got anywhere near any chicks at ‘ inspiration point ‘ if it wasnt for Fonzy being his mate.
Without The Fonz Ritchy was just a skinny , lanky , ginger headed pratt singing ” I Found my Thrill on Blueberry Hill “. Avoided by every girl he pathetically tried to chat up.
Yet somehow by becoming friends with The Fonz he was given some kind of imaginary penis extension and women found him irresistable!! You have alot to thank Fonzy for Ritchy.

Yea when Ritchie left it was downhill.
Fonzies belly got bigger by each episode and he started to hobble around. Plus its not so cool being a tubby 40 something man staying in a room above ur friends parents house.
The chicks didnt dig Fonzy anymore. Going upto Inspiration Point with an aged biker in denial was’nt so cool.
