Room 101

Room 101 is a BBC comedy television series based on the radio series of the same name, in which celebrities were invited to discuss their pet hates and persuade the host to consign them to a fate worse than death in Room 101, named after the torture room in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, which is itself named after a meeting room in the BBC Broadcasting House where Orwell would sit through tedious meetings. It was produced independently for the corporation by Hat Trick Productions, screened on BBC Two.

In the show, the audience often took part in deciding what entered the room, although the host made the final decision. Any item can go into Room 101 and it is also possible for an item to be nominated more than once. Ben Elton has successfully been cast twice into Room 101 by Anne Robinson and Mark Steel. Football was originally nominated by Nick Hancock but it escaped being consigned. Then, in the same series, Spike Milligan nominated football, again unsuccessfully. Finally it was later cast into Room 101 by Marcus Brigstocke. Memorable guests have included Peter Cook, Will Self, Stephen Fry, Boris Johnson, Anne Robinson and Ian Hislop, the only person to appear twice on the show. Fry went as far as to put Room 101 itself into Room 101.

  1. Ive followed the show through all its changes. Nick Hancock was funny. Paul Merton even better and now this new version is the best yet. Not for Frank Skinner though just because there is more variety having 3 guests on at once and the show is now moving at a quicker pace.

  2. I agree. I couldnt stand Nick Hancock. What a smarmy little shit he was. I’m glad hes reduced to doing voice overs for low budget super markets.

Merton was a softer touch but far funnier and a more likeable person.

  3. Never jumped, and actually got BETTER after Hancock left. Yes, Merton was more of a pushover and tended to let everything in, but he’s just plain funnier.

Were there duff guests? Of course. But there were some crackers too, particularly Stephen Fry and Boris Johnson.

If you didn’t like “Room 101″ – which was essentially about griping about things you dislike and dismissing them with pithy insults – what on earth are YOU doing on JTS???

Well-loved. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0
