Tom and Jerry

Tom and Jerry  is an American series of theatrical animated cartoon films created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, centering on a never-ending rivalry between a cat (Tom) and a mouse (Jerry) whose chases and battles often involved comic violence. Hanna and Barbera ultimately wrote and directed one hundred and fourteen Tom and Jerry shorts at the MGM cartoon studio in Hollywood, California between 1940 and 1957, when the animation unit was closed. The original series is notable for having won the Academy Award for Animated Short Film seven times, tying it with Walt Disney’s Silly Symphonies as the theatrical animated series with the most Oscars. The series features comedic fights between an iconic set of enemies, a house cat and mouse.

The plots of each short usually center on Tom’s numerous attempts to capture Jerry and the mayhem and destruction that ensues. Despite the sometimes heavy amount of fantasy violence, most Tom and Jerry episodes now carry a TV-G rating, although it was originally rated TV-Y. Tom rarely succeeds in catching Jerry, mainly because of Jerry’s cleverness, cunning abilities, and luck. Tom and Jerry has a worldwide audience that consists of children, teenagers and adults, and has also been recognized as one of the most famous and longest-lived rivalries in American cinema. In 2000, TIME named the series one of the greatest television shows of all time.

  1. The Tom & Jerry Show from the 1980s wasnt a patch on the original. And weirdly had worse animation and audio than the original cartoons from way back in 50s/60s. The opening credits and shitty theme tune give an indication of what standard you are about to see.

  2. Basically, any modern ones are shit. Classic “Tom and Jerry” was brilliant, anarchic and violent – yet, even as a kid, I never thought it was a good idea to copy said antics. I can’t recall dropping a bowling ball on my brother’s head, or chasing him into an extended ironing board.

Why can’t “Health and Safety” bugger off?

  3. I think the show jumped the shark when Tom and Jerry became friends. The show just lost its humor when that happened and I found the episodes where Tom and Jerry were more like rivals to be more interesting and hilarious.
